How to incorporate a roof into your landscaping

Choose hardscapes and plants that work well with the color, texture, shape, and lines of your roof.

It is connected to the houses above it in large and small ways, offering the best views. Attention
to detail makes ordinary spaces extraordinary. It’s important to bring the tone of brick, stone, or
painted siding into the landscape with thoughtful plant selection, but what about that roof? Whether you buy a house with a colorful roof, build a house with a colorful iron roof, or inherit a house with a tiled roof, the principle is the same. Let’s see how to solve the dilemma and fit your home into the landscape.

Homeowners often forget to look up when designing a landscape. Sometimes I think they are
secretly hoping that their challenging roof will just go away. But for a perfect home garden
connection, there must be a continuous flow where all parts support each other.

Consider three things: color, texture and shape. After addressing these three things, consider an
accessory that brings all the pieces of your composition together.

Color

Roofing comes in many colors, some safer and easier to work with than others. Select hardscapes
such as sidewalks and decks to create continuity through color. If you’ve purchased a home that
struggles with this, consider painting or staining the floor hardscape to create a connection.

The sidewalk pavement in this photo mimics the color of shingles and is pulled into the floor to
create a uniform look.

The cut stone pavers in this photo do double duty, choosing both the tone of the house’s metal roof and the gray color of the stone cladding. Notice how the shape of the paver affects the vertical seams of the roof and visually pushes the eye outward towards the larger landscape.

Planting plan is paramount when creating this color connection. Notice how this ornamental grass lawn is chosen for the darker tone of the roof and contrasts with the lighter tone of the house siding for a harmonious look.

Ornamental grass is a useful tool for making these connections. Species and cultivars can be found in a variety of colors such as pink, blue, orange, red and green.

A metal roof with an orange or brown metallic tint can easily complement or contrast with foliage. Don’t ignore the seasonal foliage color provided by shrubs.

See how this pink cornflower brings color from the home’s metal and tile roof, creating a seamless
connection between the home and garden. Joe Pye weed and ‘Autumn Joy’ stonecrop further
strengthen this connection.

Texture

Utilizing texture allows your home and garden to shine among the ordinary spaces in your
neighborhood. As a designer, my goal is to emphasize texture as much as possible.

Some roofing materials have more texture than others. If your roof has wood shakes, slate or tile,
take the opportunity to bring that texture into your garden.

Notice how the color and texture of this home roof tile translates into a garden next to an old brick pathway. Although the materials are different, they share colors and textures to create a meaningful home garden connection.

So far, we’ve seen how hardscaping can be used to bring textures from the home to the garden, but
plants can also make these connections. See how the roofing texture is pulled by informed planting
in this photo. The designers of this space initiate a mental connection with us by repeating the roof
color of the plants closest to the house. The lesson learned from this well-designed illustration is
that you can set a precedent for the rest of your garden by making the plants closest to your home
the ones most similar in color and texture.

Shapes and lines

Shapes and lines make up the third parameter. If the roofing material has a recognizable shape or
pattern, highlight it to create a connection. Note how the vertical seams of the metal roof shown
here are accentuated by the tall, structured arrangement of palm trees. Additionally, the color of
the palm body adds texture while pulling on both the siding stain and the roof.

In this example, the baseline or run of roofing material is picked up by the stone siding and then
down to the staggered edge garden floor of the stone patio. Also note how the lines on the patio
furniture further reinforce the connection to the home. This kind of attention to detail will create a
professionally designed look in your space.

Accessories

Proper selection and placement of accessories will make or break a space. Ceramic or terracotta
pottery, sculptures, light fixtures, mailboxes and house numbers are all fair game that can be used
to connect the home and garden.

Notice how the Italian terracotta pots on this terrace beautifully bring out the color of the roof,
giving the terrace a grounding in the space. Good quality pottery is an investment but worth it.

Notice how the rocks in this nearly-monochromatic garden add texture while removing the gray
from the shingles. Meanwhile, the crushed stone on the garden floor seems to flow naturally from
the house, creating a second meaningful connection between the house and the garden.

Choose your rocks carefully and remember their color, texture, size and shape to create
connections. A poorly chosen rock is not a design asset and can be an eyesore.

Well-chosen and well-placed sculptures are the primary tools for making connections. See how
this Asian piece grounds the house in space with its choice of color, line and texture for the roof.
